Challenges and Opportunities in Marketing XFL Teams in New Markets
While the excitement surrounding the XFL offers immense opportunities, marketing relatively new teams still comes with its own set of challenges. This article will delve into the “grass-roots” level strategies and approaches that I believe should be employed to successfully market a local XFL team, and the avenues through which fans can be won over.
First and foremost is the competition for fan loyalty. In 2023, the sports entertainment industry offers a plethora of options, ranging from traditional leagues like the NFL, NBA, and MLB to smaller-yet-healthy esports and international soccer leagues. To carve out a space for a local XFL team, each will have to differentiate itself from the available alternatives, and offer a unique experience that resonates with fans. A great example on this is the LA sports market where even the Chargers struggle to sell tickets. If you’re marketing a team to a town with lots of other choices, or to a fickle fanbase with little patience for a struggling or rebuilding team, get used to the empty stands. That said, the XFL was right to pull out of LA rather than fight to eke out a following.

Community engagement is not just a buzzword; it’s the cornerstone of any success business strategy. The XFL is not just looking to just have teams that play in each of their eight cities; they’re aiming to become an integral part of the community’s fabric. That means forging alliances that go beyond game nights. Each team partnering with local charities, schools, and businesses would create a true sense of belonging on the local level. Showing that the team isn’t just about touchdowns and championships, but about making a positive impact. A perfect example is the San Antonio Brahmas’ back to school drive on August 5th. According to the San Antonio Brahmas XFL Fan page on Facebook, the event was organized by James Carr II, the team’s Ticket Sales and Experience Manager and involved local podcasters such Horns Forward Podcast, superfans like 210Brahmacita, and local musical talent Austin Aisley.
In 2022 the XFL partnered with Under the Lights Flag Football and sponsored their Championship game in San Antonio. Under the Lights is an international boys and girls youth flag football league available to K-12 ages. In the same spirit as this, imagine local XFL teams hosting youth clinics where aspiring athletes get to learn from XFL players and coaches. Or, imagine having XFL players attending local high school football practices and games- building mentorship bonds that extend beyond the field.

When it comes to fan interactions it’s critical to break down the barriers between the organizations and fans that can characterize larger pro sports teams. Fan meet-ups, autograph sessions, attending local festivals, and interactive events should all part of the plan. The teams should want fans to know that these players aren’t distant stars; they’re part of the same neighborhood. By showing up at local spots and rubbing shoulders with the people, they’re bridging the gap between the field and the streets.
Game days aren’t just about the action on the field; they’re about creating an unforgettable experience for everyone who walks through the gates. We’re transforming the stadium into a vibrant hub of entertainment that keeps fans on their toes from kickoff to the final whistle. It’s all about crafting moments that stick in their memory long after they leave.
Picture this: during halftime, the field transforms into a stage for heart-pounding performances by local artists and entertainers. Fan zones, brimming with interactive games and contests, keep the energy soaring during breaks. Augmented reality experiences make every timeout an opportunity for fans to dive deeper into the game. And let’s not forget about those jaw-dropping light shows and pyrotechnics that set the sky ablaze.
The game-day experience shouldn’t be confined to the field, but spill into the concourses and beyond. Local food vendors dishing out the city’s signature flavors, local artisans showcasing their crafts – it’s all about creating an atmosphere that celebrates the city’s uniqueness. Fan zone stations where fans can interact with new technologies showcased in the 2023 Combine such as the units Catapult Sports used to measure velocity acceleration, the devices used to measure grip strength provided by VALD Dynamo, and even bringing in virtual reality stations that let fans virtually step onto the field, would enhance the experience even further. Live polls, interactive challenges, and fan-driven chants make them feel like they’re part of the action, not just passive onlookers. It’s about crafting an immersive experience that makes them feel like they’re not just watching a game; they’re part of something electric, something unforgettable.
In the end, community convergence and the game-day spectacle are two sides of the same coin. They’re about making every fan feel like they’re part of a big, boisterous family – whether it’s through community initiatives that give back or through electrifying game days that keep them coming back for more. It’s not just about the sport; it’s about creating a vibrant, living, breathing ecosystem where fans, players, and the community intertwine in a way that’s truly special.
