Ser and Estar
In Spanish, Ser and Estar both translate to the English verb "to be", but they are used in different contexts. While they may seem similar, each verb has distinct meanings and rules of usage. Understanding when to use Ser and when to use Estar is crucial for mastering Spanish, as it affects the meaning of your sentences.
General Rules
Ser generally applies to more or less permanent or intrinsic traits—but there are exceptions. It is used to describe WHO or WHAT someone or something is, or what they are like.
Examples:
El hombre es mi profesor. (The man is my teacher.)
Los chicos son mis hijos. (The boys are my children.)
La mujer es inteligente. (The woman is intelligent.)
Estar generally applies to more or less temporary or changeable traits—again there are exceptions. It is used to describe HOW or WHERE someone or something is, or what they are like at the moment.
Examples:
El hombre está feliz. (The man is happy.)
La mujer está en el restaurante. (The woman is at the restaurant.)
Los chicos están cansados. (The boys are tired.)
