Tips for Acing Your First Job Interview: How to Be Successful and Land the Job

Preparing for your first job interview can be a daunting experience, especially if you’re a teenager. You may feel overwhelmed by the thought of having to answer questions and make a good impression on a potential employer. However, with the right preparation, you can make sure you’re ready to ace your first job interview.

The first step in preparing for a job interview is to research the company. You should take the time to learn about the company’s history, mission, and values. This will help you understand the company’s culture and how you might fit into it. Popular sites like Glassdoor, Indeed, and LinkedIn can help with this.

You should also research the job you’re applying for and the qualifications and skills required for the position. This will help you understand what the employer is looking for and how you can demonstrate that you have the necessary skills and qualifications. You can try sites like Monster, Vault, and The Muse for help understanding what companies that hire the particular type of job your are interviewing for generally want. However, the company’s own website will have the most important information for you to get familiar with. Read the duties, skills, and expectations for the job that the company itself attaches to the position.

The next step is to practice your answers to common interview questions. You can go to  Interview Cake, Big Interview, Prepterminal, or Interview Query for help here. You should think about the types of questions you might be asked and prepare answers that demonstrate your knowledge and enthusiasm for the job. You should also practice your body language and make sure you’re making eye contact and smiling during the interview.

It’s also important to prepare for the interview by dressing appropriately. You should wear clothing that is neat, clean, and professional. Make sure you’re not wearing anything too revealing or too casual. You should also make sure your hair is neat and your nails are clean. Once again, the company’s website as well as simply observing the attire of the people already employed there should give you enough of an idea of how to present yourself. If all else fails, a suit and tie, or a blouse and skirt (or ladies’ pants suit) never hurts!

Listen to an interview online the day before and (especially) on your way to the interview. This is my personal favorite hidden gem of interview prep, because some things just have to be seen. Watching others interact with each other helps get your mind is prepped for the kinds of interpersonal dynamics that tend to come up in interviews that can’t simply be read about. These may include: how to accentuate your points, how to deal with assertive interviewer, how to sit and make eye contact, what to do if you need to gather your thoughts, and simply how to pick a demeanor that is appropriate for your interview setting, etc.

Videos and podcasts can show what to do, or even what not to do in an interview. I recommend you find a popular professional (a professor, journalist, etc.) whose style you may feel is compatible with your personality, then try to absorb a little from an interview they have done on the news or on a podcast. However, make sure the interview is a professional one, and not a hangout with their favorite YouTuber. Do not try to be them (appearing phony never helps!), but allow their style to help inform what you may want yours to be. You are not watching a person you like or admire per se, but rather a person who interviews well and has a style that is similar to what might be natural for you. Being able to rehearse the non-verbal and non-informational dynamics may help to take away some of the stress.

Finally, you should make sure you arrive to the interview on time. You should plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early so you have time to fill out any paperwork and get settled. You should also bring a copy of your resume and any other documents the employer may need.
